How To Deal with High-Tech Car Thieves

It seems today’s high-tech cars are fast falling prey to high-tech car thieves.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau in Des Plaines, Ill., reports an increasing number of criminals are using electronic “scanner boxes” to deduce the codes and pop the locks on cars equipped with keyless entry systems, This affords quick access to personal property left inside the car and allows a thief to quickly empty its contents in on a crowded street without raising attention.

“Our law enforcement partners tell us they are seeing this type of criminal activity and have recovered some of the illegal devices,” says NICB president and CEO Joe Wehrle. “And unfortunately, some of these devices are available on the Internet.”

Motorists are advised never to leave personal possessions in plain sight within a parked car, especially such tempting items as GPS navigation systems and radar detectors. Likewise, never leave the cords or adaptors for such devices out in the open – it’s a sure signal that the hardware to which they’re connected is likely hiding somewhere else within the vehicle.
