The compact Ford Escape crossover has the dubious distinction of being the most stolen model among all SUVs from the 2011-2013 model years, with 1,421 units purloined between Jan. 1, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2013.

That’s according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau in Des Plaines, Ill, which reports a total of 21,711 models in the segment were stolen during that period, with compact crossovers (6,981) and full-size SUVs (3,206) proving to be the most popular types among car thieves.

Rounding out the top five most pilfered SUV/crossovers from 2001-2013 are the Ford Edge (1,140), Ford Explorer (958), Jeep Grand Cherokee (912) and the Kia Sorento (725).

The NICB says California (3,531), Florida (1,897), Michigan (1,834), Texas (1,686) and New York (1,577) are the top states for SUV/crossover thefts, with Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA being the most theft-prone metropolitan area in the nation with 2,530 SUVs/crossover stolen.
