Porsche Unveils a Powerful Plug-In Panamera

For the 2018 Panamera, Porsche is trying something new. First the first time, the line’s flagship is a plug-in hybrid.

The 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid combines the Panamera Turbo’s 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor for a total output of 680 horsepower and 626 lb.-ft. of torque. That means that only the limited-production 918 Spyder has ever had more power.

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds (3.3 seconds for the Executive model) and has a top track speed of 192 mph.

While EPA-rated fuel economy and range is not yet available, the New European Driving Cycle numbers put the car’s average fuel consumption at 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers (about 81 mpg) and electric-only range at 50 kilometers (about 31 miles).

The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid builds on the previous Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, which combined a twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor. The high mpg numbers and impressive horsepower show that even high-end sports cars can benefit from hybrid technology.

A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery powers the electric motor with an energy capacity of 14.1 kWh. Using a standard 120 V, 10-amp power outlet, the battery takes 12 hours to fully charge. Using a 240 V, 40-amp connection cuts the charge time down to less than three hours. Owners can use a smartphone or Apple Watch app to start or monitor the charging process.

The car is also fitted out for comfort. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid features an auxiliary air conditioner to cool or heat the car before driving. Once inside, passengers can use a 12.3-inch touchscreen to manage and control car features. Using the Porsche Communication Management system, drivers and passengers can access navigation features, online connectivity and Apple Car Play integration.
